From Cape Horn Through the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula

At the southern tip of South America lies Cape Horn, one of the most legendary and challenging maritime locations on Earth. For centuries, it served as the primary sea route between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans before the Panama Canal was built. Even today, Cape Horn is famous for its powerful winds, towering waves, and rapidly changing weather, making it one of the world’s most demanding sailing routes.

Just south of Cape Horn begins the Drake Passage, the body of water that separates South America from Antarctica. Stretching about 800 kilometers (500 miles) across at its narrowest point, it is where the Atlantic, Pacific, and Southern Oceans interact. With no major landmass to block the currents, the passage is known for rough seas, strong storms, and waves that can reach 10–15 meters (33–49 feet) or even higher during severe weather.

The ocean around Cape Horn is relatively shallow near the coast, with depths of approximately 100–300 meters. Farther into the Drake Passage, the seafloor drops dramatically to 1,000–3,000 meters, while many areas exceed 4,000–5,000 meters in depth. The deepest parts reach approximately 5,800 meters (19,000 feet).

The distance from Cape Horn to the Antarctic Peninsula is approximately 650–800 kilometers (400–500 miles), depending on the destination. Most Antarctic expeditions depart from Ushuaia, Argentina, or Punta Arenas, Chile, and cross the Drake Passage in about two days, although the journey depends heavily on weather and sea conditions.

As ships approach the Antarctic Peninsula, the turbulent ocean gradually gives way to a breathtaking frozen landscape. Towering glaciers, floating icebergs, snow-covered mountains, and abundant wildlife—including penguins, seals, and whales—create one of the most spectacular natural environments on Earth. The voyage from Cape Horn through the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most unforgettable ocean adventures in the world.
