The ancestors of the blue whale were small, four-legged land
The ancestors of the blue whale were small, four-legged land mammals that lived millions of years ago. They did not look like modern whales.
The evolution path was roughly:
1. πΎ Indohyus (about 48 million years ago)
* A small deer-like mammal.
* It lived near water and is considered a close relative of early whale ancestors.
2. πΎ Pakicetus (about 50 million years ago)
* A land-dwelling mammal.
* Its fossils were found in the region of present-day Pakistan.
* It is one of the earliest known whale relatives.
3. π Ambulocetus and other early whales
* They gradually adapted to living more in water.
* Their legs became smaller and their bodies became more streamlined.
4. π After millions of years of evolution, these animals became fully aquatic whales, eventually giving rise to modern whales, including the blue whale.
So, the blue whaleβs distant ancestor was a small land mammal, somewhat like a deer-sized animal β not a dinosaur and not a reptile. Because they produced eggs. π₯
