Neuralink’s ultra-thin electrode threads are made from a combination of specialized materials. While the company has not publicly disclosed every manufacturing detail, published research and patents indicate they primarily include:
* Polyimide – A highly flexible, biocompatible polymer that forms the base (substrate) of the thread.
* Gold – Used for some of the conductive traces that carry electrical signals.
* Platinum – Used at the electrode contact sites that interface with brain tissue.
* Thin-film insulating layers – These insulate the conductive traces so that only the electrode tips record or stimulate neural activity.
Key features
* They are thinner than a human hair.
* They are extremely flexible, helping reduce damage caused by normal brain movement.
