Will Cathcart announced that WhatsApp is rolling out unique usernames.

Users can create a unique username instead of sharing their phone number.
This is designed to improve privacy, especially when chatting with people who don't already have your number.
Username reservations have started, with the full feature rolling out gradually over the coming months.
You can reserve a username by going to Settings → Account → Username (once the feature is available on your account).
Rules for usernames include:
3–35 characters long.
Must be unique.
Some usernames are reserved for public figures and organizations to reduce impersonation.
