New Delhi: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital technology are often celebrated as the future of innovation. But behind the convenience lies a growing environmental concern. Every AI prompt, online search, video stream, and cloud service relies on massive data centers that consume enormous amounts of electricity around the clock.
When this electricity comes from coal, oil, or natural gas, it results in significant carbon dioxide (COâ‚‚) emissions, adding to global warming. As AI adoption accelerates worldwide, the demand for computing power continues to rise, increasing energy consumption.
Training advanced AI models requires thousands of high-performance processors running continuously for days or even weeks. These systems also generate intense heat, requiring powerful cooling infrastructure that consumes additional electricity and, in many cases, large quantities of water.
The environmental impact extends beyond data centers. Manufacturing AI chips, smartphones, laptops, and servers requires mining rare minerals, industrial production, and global transportation—all of which contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, rapidly growing electronic waste (e-waste) creates another environmental challenge.
Environmental experts warn that unless the digital revolution is powered increasingly by renewable energy, the expanding AI industry could place additional pressure on the world’s climate and energy systems.
