Microsoft has announced it will stop selling a subset of its cloud and AI services to Unit 8200, the Israeli military’s notorious surveillance agency. This decision comes after months of sustained worker organising, encampments at corporate headquarters, and direct action campaigns. Yet, as investigations have revealed, Microsoft continues to service hundreds of other contracts with the Israeli military, including units managing the population registry and enforcing the movement of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank.
This partial withdrawal is a first, but it is not enough. Microsoft remains deeply enmeshed in Israel’s genocidal war machine, providing the technological backbone to apartheid and occupation.
As part of our ongoing Dispatches series, Suchitra and Vaniya Agarwal break down Big Tech’s complicity in Palestine. Until earlier this year, Vaniya worked at Microsoft. When she realised her labour was tied to Israel’s military projects, she wrote an open letter and resigned. Since then, she has helped organise encampments and sit-ins at Microsoft’s headquarters, facing arrest alongside other workers demanding accountability.
