In India, linking Voter ID with Aadhaar has been discussed for many years, but it has not been made fully mandatory. One of the main reasons is concern about citizens’ privacy, because Aadhaar contains biometric information such as fingerprints and iris data. Experts worry that mandatory linking could increase the risk of misuse of personal data. In addition, the Supreme Court of India has set certain limits on how Aadhaar can be used, so the government must ensure that people’s rights are not affected. Another reason is that although most people in India have Aadhaar, some still do not, or their details may contain errors; making linking compulsory could potentially prevent some eligible citizens from voting. Therefore, the Election Commission of India currently allows Aadhaar linking with voter ID on a voluntary basis mainly to help remove duplicate names from voter lists.
