48 Food Additives to Avoid — Could These Be in Your Diet?

1. Synthetic Colors and Dyes
1. Red Dye No. 3 (Erythrosine) – Linked to cancer in animal studies; banned in cosmetics but still used in food in the U.S.
2. Red 40 (Allura Red) – Common in processed snacks; linked to hyperactivity and behavioral issues in children. Listed for warning in Texas.
3. Yellow 5 and 6 – Found in cereals, candies; associated with allergic reactions and possibly ADHD-like symptoms.
4. Blue 1 and 2 – Used in sodas, candies; animal studies suggest potential cancer links.
5. Other FDandC Dyes – Green No. 3, etc., often have insufficient safety data, particularly for children.

2. Artificial Sweeteners
6. Aspartame – Possible carcinogen; includes phenylalanine, dangerous for phenylketonuria patients.
7. Sucralose, Saccharin, Acesulfame-K – Linked to gut issues, weight gain, and potential health risks.

3. Processed Sugars and Fillers
8. High-Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) – Associated with obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome.
9. Evaporated Cane Juice – Often used as a “healthier” sweetener, but nearly the same as refined sugar.

4. Preservatives and Additives
10. Sodium Nitrite and Nitrate – Found in processed meats; can form carcinogenic nitrosamines.
11. Sulfites (Sulfur Dioxide, Potassium/Sodium Bisulfite) – Trigger asthma and allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.
12. Sodium Benzoate – May form benzene when mixed with vitamin C; linked to ADHD symptoms.
13. Potassium Bromate – Taller dough in bread; classified as a potential carcinogen, banned in many countries.
14. BHA and BHT – Synthetic antioxidants used in preserved goods; linked to cancer in animal studies.
15. TBHQ (Tertiary Butylhydroquinone) – Used in processed snacks; associated with nausea, dizziness, DNA damage.
16. Propyl Gallate – Preserves fats; may disrupt hormones or be carcinogenic.
17. Propyl Paraben – Preservative found in jams, ice cream; endocrine disruptor linked to reproductive toxicity.

5. Thickeners, Emulsifiers and Stabilizers
18. Carrageenan (E407) – Derived from seaweed; linked to gut inflammation and digestive issues.
19. Guar Gum – Used in soups, ice creams; excessive intake may cause digestive obstruction.
20. Xanthan Gum – Thickener in gluten-free goods; may cause gas and digestive discomfort.

6. Industrial and Controversial Additives
21. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO) – Emulsifier in citrus drinks; linked to thyroid issues and banned in many countries.
22. Azodicarbonamide – Dough conditioner; linked to respiratory sensitization and banned in EU/Australia.
23. Phthalates (in packaging) – Not a direct additive, but leaches into food, potentially disrupting hormones and affecting neurodevelopment.

7. Concerns About Multiple Additive Exposure
• Studies show combined exposure to dyes, emulsifiers, and sweeteners may increase risk of Type 2 diabetes and metabolic disorders.
• Broad concerns exist about additives classified under GRAS that lack independent safety reviews.
• Legislative efforts in several U.S. states aim to ban or label these additives due to health risks.

What Can You Do?
• Read labels carefully and avoid items with many unrecognizable additives.
• Use apps like EWG Healthy Living or Yuka to help identify unsafe ingredients.
• Prefer whole, minimally processed foods—especially important for children and pregnant women.
• Support regulatory reforms and bans on additives linked to health risks.
