Hawala Network:
Hawala Network – An Informal and Illegal Money Transfer System
The Hawala Network is an illegal and unofficial method of transferring money, often used to move black money (unaccounted or untaxed income) from one country to another — without using any formal banking system.
🧾 What is the Hawala Network?
• “Hawala” is an Arabic word that means “transfer” or “remittance.”
• In this system, money is transferred from one place to another without physically crossing borders.
• It works based on trust and middlemen (brokers or agents).
🧪 How Does Hawala Work?
Example:
1. Suppose someone wants to send ₹10 lakh from India to someone abroad, but without using banks.
2. He contacts a Hawala agent in India (Agent A) and gives him ₹10 lakh in cash.
3. Agent A then informs his partner Hawala agent abroad (Agent B) to give that amount to the intended recipient.
4. Agent B gives the money to the person abroad without any official bank transaction.
5. Later, the recipient’s family in the foreign country gives the equivalent money to Agent B — balancing the system.
👉 No bank was used, and yet the money reached.
So, the actual cash didn’t leave the country, but ownership changed.
⚠️ Why is Hawala Dangerous?
• ❌ It is illegal – Hawala transactions are banned in India.
• 🏦 Encourages tax evasion and promotes black money circulation.
• 💣 Often used in terrorism, smuggling, corruption, and criminal networks.
• ❌ No formal records exist, so it’s hard for authorities to trace or investigate.
