β’ If the husband could not give children, or premature death, then that woman was allowed to get children under religious custom from a worthy man (eg brother-in-law, sage, or any senior man of the family) for descendant growth.
β’ This relationship was not for "enjoyment or lust" but for lineage preservation.
β’ It has been called in the scriptures:
β’ Kshetraja child (kαΉ£trajΔ) - A woman was called "land" and a man was called "seed".
β’ The child was considered a child's child, even if the seed was of another man.
π According to Manusmriti (Chapter IX, Shloka 59β63):
β’ The employer had to do this task only once, without pure, any kind of conversation, laughter or sensual signal.
β’ Ghee etc. were used to purify and rituals on the body.
β’ The son was considered to be the successor of the husband and not the employer.
π· Prominent examples of Niyog in Mahabharata:
1. The episode of Satyavati and Vyas:
