The air around us may feel light and invisible, but it is actually made of an enormous number of tiny particles called atoms and molecules. Even though each atom is extremely small, together they form the entire atmosphere that surrounds the Earth. Understanding the mass of atoms such as oxygen and nitrogen helps us understand how the atmosphere exists and why it stays around our planet.

Atomic Mass of Oxygen and Nitrogen

An atom of Oxygen has an atomic mass of about 16 atomic mass units (amu). One atomic mass unit is approximately 1.66 × 10⁻²⁷ kilograms. This means that the mass of a single oxygen atom is roughly 2.66 × 10⁻²⁶ kg, or 2.66 × 10⁻²³ grams. Because this mass is extremely small, a single gram of oxygen contains about 3.7 × 10²² atoms.

Similarly, an atom of Nitrogen has an atomic mass of about 14 amu. In kilograms, this equals roughly 2.32 × 10⁻²⁶ kg, or 2.32 × 10⁻²³ grams per atom. As a result, 1 gram of nitrogen contains around 4.3 × 10²² atoms.

Although each atom is incredibly small, trillions upon trillions of these atoms combine to form the gases that make up Earth’s atmosphere.

Composition of Earth’s Atmosphere

The Earth’s atmosphere is a mixture of several gases. The main components are:
• 78% nitrogen
• 21% oxygen
• About 0.93% Argon
• Around 0.04% Carbon dioxide

In addition, very small amounts of other gases exist, such as Neon, Helium, Methane, Krypton, and Hydrogen. The atmosphere also contains water vapor, dust particles, pollen, and other microscopic materials.

Total Mass of the Atmosphere

Even though air feels light, the entire atmosphere of Earth has a massive total mass of approximately 5.15 × 10¹⁸ kilograms. This mass is distributed around the planet in layers extending hundreds of kilometers above the surface.

Why the Atmosphere Does Not Escape Into Space

The reason this enormous amount of gas stays around Earth is because of gravity. The gravitational pull of the planet constantly attracts atmospheric gases toward it. This force can be described by Newton’s gravitational law:

F = G\frac{Mm}{r^2}

In this equation:
• F is the gravitational force
• M is the mass of the Earth
• m is the mass of the object (such as a gas particle)
• r is the distance from the center of the Earth

This gravitational force keeps the atmosphere bound to the planet.

Why Air Does Not Collapse to the Surface

Although gravity pulls gases toward Earth, atmospheric molecules are always moving rapidly and colliding with each other. Their constant motion spreads them out around the planet, creating the layered structure of the atmosphere instead of letting it collapse entirely to the ground.

Loss of Light Gases

Some very light gases, especially hydrogen and helium, can slowly escape from the upper atmosphere into space. Over long periods of time, this process slightly changes the composition of the atmosphere.

A good example of what happens without strong gravity is the Moon. Because the Moon has much weaker gravity than Earth, it cannot hold a thick atmosphere, leaving it almost airless.

The Earth’s atmosphere is an enormous collection of tiny atoms, mainly nitrogen and oxygen. Although each atom has an extremely small mass, together they form a massive envelope of gas weighing about 5.15 × 10¹⁸ kilograms. This vast atmosphere remains around our planet because of Earth’s gravitational pull, which continuously holds these gases close to the planet while their motion spreads them throughout the sky.
