In the ongoing Middle East conflict involving Iran, Iran has launched missile and drone attacks on targets in the Gulf region, including facilities in the United Arab Emirates. During one of these waves of attacks, an Amazon Web Services data center in the UAE was struck by unidentified objects, which caused sparks and a fire at the facility, forcing authorities to cut power as a safety measure. This resulted in a temporary outage of cloud services and disruptions impacting connectivity in that region. The company did not officially confirm it was a direct targeted attack by Iran, but the incident happened in the context of Iranian strikes across the Gulf amid retaliation for wider conflict actions.
This kind of strike on a major data center highlights how physical warfare in the region is starting to affect critical digital infrastructure, including cloud systems that host AI services and online platforms — even if the center itself wasn’t specifically chosen because of “AI war.”
