India’s School System Under Transformation
According to data from the Ministry of Education through UDISE reports (2017–18 to 2024–25), over 87,000 schools are no longer reflected in the system, while nearly 2.41 crore children appear outside the formal education structure. This is not merely a statistical fluctuation—it signals a deep structural transformation in India’s education landscape. Policies such as School Rationalization, shifts toward consolidation, and the implementation of National Education Policy 2020 are reshaping access, especially in rural and marginalized communities. States like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan show significant school closures or mergers. At the same time, enrollment in private schools has increased substantially, raising questions about access, affordability, and equity. With constitutional guarantees under the RTE Act promising free and compulsory education, the gap between policy intent and ground reality deserves urgent public attention. If these trends continue toward 2030, the future of public education in India could look fundamentally different—especially for SC/ST/OBC and economically weaker sections.
