Most of the water present on Earth today has existed for billions of years and continues to circulate through a natural system called the water cycle. In this cycle, water changes its form—from liquid in oceans and rivers to water vapor in the atmosphere and to ice in glaciers—before returning again to liquid form. These are physical changes, meaning the water molecule (H₂O) remains chemically the same. During normal evaporation, water does not break into hydrogen and oxygen; it simply changes from liquid to gas. However, in the upper atmosphere, strong ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the Sun can sometimes split water molecules in a process called photodissociation. In this case, hydrogen—being very light—can escape into space. Even so, the amount of water lost this way is extremely small compared to the vast mass of Earth’s oceans. Therefore, scientists conclude that almost all of Earth’s ancient water is still present today, continuously cycling but largely conserved over geological time. 🌍
