In India, the population census is conducted in a structured and legal manner by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, which works under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
🇮🇳 How the Census is Conducted in India
India conducts a national census every 10 years (for example, 2001 and 2011). The 2021 Census was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
📋 The Process Has Two Main Phases:
1️⃣ House Listing Phase
In this stage, officials collect information about:
• Number of houses
• Type of housing (permanent or temporary)
• Availability of basic facilities like water, electricity, and toilets
2️⃣ Population Enumeration Phase
Government enumerators visit every household and record details such as:
• Number of people living in the house
• Age and gender
• Marital status
• Education and occupation
• Mother tongue
Earlier, data was recorded on paper forms, but digital devices have also been introduced in recent planning.
🧮 How Is Population Estimated Between Censuses?
Between two census years, India uses data from the Civil Registration System (CRS), which records births and deaths. Population estimates are calculated based on:
• Birth rate
• Death rate
• Migration (people moving in and out)
⚖ Is It 100 percent Accurate?
No census in the world is perfectly accurate. Some people may be missed, especially homeless individuals or those in remote areas. However, India’s census is considered one of the largest and most detailed population data collection exercises in the world.
