Packed and highly processed foods often contain added sugars
Packed and highly processed foods often contain added sugars, trans fats, excess salt, artificial colors, flavor enhancers, and chemical preservatives that, when consumed regularly in large amounts, can increase the risk of several chronic diseases. For example, high levels of added sugar such as High-fructose corn syrup can contribute to weight gain, insulin resistance, and eventually type 2 diabetes. Trans fats like Partially hydrogenated oil raise “bad” LDL cholesterol and lower “good” HDL cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke. Processed meats preserved with Sodium nitrite may form harmful compounds in the body that have been associated with a higher cancer risk when consumed frequently over time. Artificial colors such as Tartrazine may trigger allergic reactions or behavioral issues in sensitive individuals, especially children. Flavor enhancers like Monosodium glutamate can cause headaches or digestive discomfort in some people. It is important to understand that these health problems usually develop gradually due to long-term poor dietary habits combined with low physical activity, not from occasional consumption. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and regular exercise significantly reduces these risks.
