Valentine’s Day is believed to have started in Ancient Rome and is connected to a man named Saint Valentine.

In the 3rd century, Roman Emperor Claudius II believed that single men made better soldiers than married men. Because of this, he banned marriages for young soldiers.
Saint Valentine thought this rule was unfair. He secretly performed marriage ceremonies for couples in love. When the emperor found out, Valentine was arrested and sentenced to death. He was executed on February 14, around 269 AD.

According to legend, while in prison, Valentine became friends with the jailer’s daughter. Before his execution, he reportedly wrote her a letter signed:
“From your Valentine.”
This phrase is still commonly used in Valentine’s Day cards today.
