Both urea and organic fertilizer are used to meet the nutritional needs of plants, but their chemical composition, mode of action, and effects on soil are quite different. Urea is a pure chemical fertilizer with the formula CO(NH₂)₂. Its structure consists of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom and bonded to two amino groups (–NH₂). Because of this structure, urea contains about 46% nitrogen, making it one of the richest sources of nitrogen for plants. When urea is applied to soil, it first converts to ammonia and then, with the help of soil microorganisms, into ammonium (NH₄⁺) and nitrate (NO₃⁻). Plants absorb nitrogen in these forms, which promotes rapid growth and results in greener leaves. However, excessive or continuous use of urea can degrade soil quality, make it compact, and reduce the population of beneficial microbes.

On the other hand, organic fertilizer is not a single chemical compound but a complex mixture of natural materials. It can include cow dung, plant residues, compost, vermicompost, or green manure. Organic fertilizers do not have a fixed chemical formula because they contain carbon compounds such as cellulose, lignin, and humus; nitrogen compounds like proteins and amino acids; and minerals such as phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Additionally, they are rich in beneficial microorganisms and fungi. When added to soil, organic fertilizer decomposes slowly, gradually releasing nutrients for plants. This improves soil structure, enhances its water-holding capacity, and keeps the soil alive and fertile over the long term.

In summary, urea is a fast-acting chemical fertilizer that provides a high concentration of nitrogen and quickly boosts plant growth, whereas organic fertilizer improves the long-term health and fertility of the soil. For sustainable and productive farming, the best approach is to use chemical fertilizers like urea in limited amounts while simultaneously applying organic fertilizers in a balanced manner, ensuring both good crop yield and long-term soil fertility.
