Not every vaccine requires DNA taken from a living cell.
However, some vaccines use living cells during the manufacturing process, which is different from using DNA as an ingredient. Here is the clear explanation:
Vaccines are defined by their final composition, not by how they are manufactured. In most cases, DNA is not a component of the finished vaccine. Some vaccine technologies use cells only as a production system, similar to how factories are used to make products. For example, mRNA vaccines (such as Pfizer and Moderna) do not require living cells at all; the mRNA is chemically synthesized in the laboratory. Protein or subunit vaccines (like Hepatitis B or Novavax) use yeast, bacteria, or insect cells to produce a specific viral protein, but the final vaccine contains only the purified protein, not cellular DNA.
Other vaccines, such as viral vector vaccines (e.g., Covishield or Johnson and Johnson) and inactivated or live-attenuated vaccines (e.g., polio, measles, rabies), are grown in laboratory cell lines so that viruses can replicate. In these cases, the cells act purely as a growth medium. After production, the vaccine undergoes multiple purification and filtration steps. Any residual DNA fragments that may remain are present in extremely small, inactive amounts, well within international safety limits, and cannot replicate, function, or integrate into human DNA.
Importantly, DNA from living cells is not injected into the body as a functional substance. Even if trace fragments are detected, they are biologically inactive and rapidly broken down by the body. Vaccines therefore cannot alter human genes or genetic identity. In summary, while some vaccines are made using living cells, DNA from those cells is not a meaningful or active part of the final vaccine, and many modern vaccines do not use living cells at all.
