Why is the African continent breaking apart?
Africa is slowly splitting because of plate tectonics, the movement of large plates that make up the Earth’s surface.
Under Africa, the main African Plate is separating into smaller plates, mainly:
1. Nubian Plate (western Africa)
2. Somali Plate (eastern Africa)
3. The Arabian Plate (already separated earlier)
The zone where this splitting is happening is called the:
👉 East African Rift System
How is this happening?
This is a process called continental rifting.
Main reasons:
🔹 Hot material rising from the mantle
Hot molten rock rises from deep inside the Earth, pushing the crust upward and causing it to crack.
🔹 Plates moving apart slowly
These plates are moving away from each other at about 2–7 millimeters per year.
Very slow, but over millions of years it creates huge changes.
What will happen in the future?
In about 5 to 10 million years:
• Eastern Africa (Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, etc.)
• May completely separate from the rest of Africa
• A new ocean could form in between
• Creating a new continent
What signs do we see today?
• Large ground cracks in Kenya and Ethiopia
• Frequent earthquakes
• Active volcanoes
• In 2018, a major crack suddenly opened in Kenya
