What is the Ring of Fire?
The Ring of Fire is a horseshoe-shaped belt around the Pacific Ocean where:
• A large number of volcanoes are found
• Earthquakes occur very frequently
Why does it occur?
• It is formed due to the movement and collision of tectonic plates
• Plates collide, slide past, or subduct (one plate goes under another), causing volcanic eruptions and earthquakes
Important facts:
• About 75 percent of the world’s active volcanoes are located here
• Nearly 90% of the world’s earthquakes occur in this region
• It includes areas like Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, New Zealand, the west coast of North and South America, etc.
