In the digital age, social media has become the biggest medium of communication, information, and entertainment in India. The role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automation in this space is increasing rapidly. While these technologies make content more accessible and personalized, they also bring serious social and mental risks, especially for youth and teenagers.
One of the biggest dangers of AI and Automation on social media is the spread of fake news and deepfakes. With the help of AI, fake videos, images, and voices are being created and used to spread rumors, damage reputations, and create social unrest. In a diverse country like India, this can further intensify religious, social, and political tensions. During elections, bots and automated campaigns secretly influencing public opinion have also become a serious concern.
Moreover, social media algorithms analyze users’ preferences and repeatedly show similar types of content. This traps people in a limited mindset known as an “echo chamber.” As a result, individuals gradually lose the ability to understand or accept different viewpoints, leading to increased polarization in society.
Another major impact of AI and Automation is social media addiction. Features like endless scrolling, auto-play, reels, and shorts are intentionally designed to keep users on the screen for as long as possible. Likes, comments, and notifications train the brain to seek instant pleasure (dopamine). This leads to problems such as lack of concentration, poor academic performance, sleep disturbances, irritability, and mental stress.
In addition, AI-based platforms deeply analyze user data such as preferences, behavior, and location. This increases the risk of privacy violations and misuse of personal data. Automation also enables the creation of thousands of fake accounts, which promote trolling and cyberbullying. As a result, many young users experience serious mental pressure.
However, it would be wrong to say that AI and Automation are entirely negative. When used responsibly, they can support education, online learning, digital awareness, and the growth of small businesses. The real problem lies not in the technology itself, but in its careless and uncontrolled use.
AI and Automation on social media in India have become not just a technological issue, but a social and mental challenge. The biggest danger is not the presence of technology, but the lack of awareness about its effects. Therefore, it is essential to promote digital literacy, limit screen time, and prioritize real-life relationships, education, and creative activities. Only then can we benefit from AI and Automation while protecting ourselves from their harmful effects.
