In 2025, youth unemployment (ages 15–29) remains a serious challenge in India. According to the Monthly Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS), the youth unemployment rate was approximately 13.8percent in April 2025 and remained at nearly the same level in June 2025. This means that about one in every seven young people was unable to find a job. This rate is significantly higher than the overall national unemployment rate (around 5–6percent ), indicating that the burden of unemployment falls disproportionately on the youth. These figures are based on the Current Weekly Status, which reflects employment conditions during the previous seven days, and they vary considerably across states. The situation in Bihar is even more concerning than the national average. According to PLFS data for April–June 2025, the youth unemployment rate in Bihar was about 16.7percent, with rural areas recording nearly 17.8 percent and urban areas around 12.2percent. In other words, nearly one in six young people in Bihar was unemployed. The situation is particularly severe among educated youth, with unemployment rates of around 15 percent among graduates and nearly 19 percent among post-graduates. Overall, this scenario highlights a serious mismatch between education and employment in both Bihar and India, where young people continue to struggle to find adequate job opportunities despite holding academic degrees.
