Sonam Wangchuk is an environmentalist, educator and social activist from Ladakh(India)
• He has been campaigning for better constitutional and administrative protections for Ladakh — especially after the region’s political reorganization post-2019.
On 10 September 2025, Sonam Wangchuk began an indefinite hunger strike (protest) demanding:
1. Full statehood for Ladakh (rather than a Union Territory). 
2. Inclusion of Ladakh under the Constitution’s Sixth Schedule, which grants special protections and autonomy for tribal/indigenous areas. 
• His protest sought to highlight grievances of Ladakhi people: concerns over land rights, identity, environmental protections and political representation after the 2019 reorganisation that changed Ladakh’s status. 
After about 15 days of strike, the protest turned violent in Leh (the main town in Ladakh). Reports say youths clashed with police, local offices (including a political party office) were torched, vehicles set on fire and there were stone-pelting and arson. 
• According to police/officials: CRPF vehicles, a local party office and some government buildings were attacked during the unrest. 
• In aftermath of the violence, Sonam Wangchuk announced that he was calling off his hunger strike. He said the “message of peaceful path failed” and appealed to people to stop violence — arguing that the unrest would harm their cause. 
• The region saw curfew / prohibitory orders and a tense security atmosphere. 
• The demands reflect long-standing anxieties in Ladakh: identity protection, political representation, land and tribal rights and safeguards for ecosystem and traditional lifestyle. The removal of earlier constitutional protections (post-2019 reorganisation) has intensified these concerns. 
• The hunger strike by Wangchuk — especially beginning in sub-zero Himalayan cold — was a strong signal of desperation and resolve, intended to draw national attention. 
• Violence during the protest, however, complicated the narrative: what started as peaceful demand gathering turned chaotic. This shift has implications for how protests are perceived and handled, and may affect future negotiations.
