The Indian startup ecosystem — how many startups closed, why
The Indian startup ecosystem — how many startups closed, why, and what this means —
This year 2025 has continued to see a dramatic wave of shutdowns among Indian startups. According to data from #Tracxn, as of October 2025 around 11,223 startups have shut down, marking roughly a 30 percent increase over the number that closed in 2024. The broader context shows that over the past two years (2023 and 2024), more than 28,000 startups have folded — far exceeding the roughly 2,300 closures during the three-year period 2019–2022. The brunt of the shut-downs has fallen on sectors that had boomed during the funding-heavy years: B2C e-commerce, enterprise software, SaaS, as well as fintech, edtech, agritech and healthtech.
The reasons behind this collapse are many and interlinked. As investor funding dried up, the “growth-at-all-costs” playbook — common during 2020–2022 — proved unsustainable. Startups struggled with high cash burn, poor product-market fit, rising customer acquisition costs, insufficient retention, and weak revenues. Many that counted on follow-on rounds or aggressive expansion couldn’t survive when valuations dropped and financial discipline became the norm again.
