The image shows Mindar, a six-foot-tall android priest, with a Buddhist monk at the Kodaiji temple in Kyoto, Japan.
• Mindar was developed as a collaboration between the temple and robotics professor Hiroshi Ishiguro of Osaka University to make Buddhist teachings more accessible to younger generations.
• The robot is modeled after Kannon, the Buddhist deity of mercy, and preaches the Heart Sutra in Japanese, with translations in other languages projected on a screen for worshippers.
• Mindar has a gender-neutral body made of aluminum with silicone covering its face, hands, and shoulders.
• The top of its skull and most of its body are exposed, revealing wires and blinking lights within its cranial cavity and body.
