Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) is often very high due to a combination of human activities and weather conditions. The large number of vehicles on the roads releases harmful gases and tiny dust particles that pollute the air. Many industries and power plants operating in and around the city also burn polluting fuels like coal, adding more toxic substances to the atmosphere. Continuous construction work creates dust, while garbage burning, especially plastic, produces dangerous smoke. During October and November, farmers in nearby states burn crop stubble, and the smoke travels to Delhi, causing a sudden rise in pollution levels. In winter, low wind and temperature inversion trap pollutants close to the ground, forming thick smog. Since Delhi is landlocked and surrounded by industrial regions, the pollution cannot disperse easily. All these factors together make the air unhealthy, which can cause breathing problems, heart and lung diseases, especially for children and the elderly. To improve air quality, steps like promoting electric vehicles, controlling dust, reducing waste burning, and using public transport need to be followed strictly by both the government and the people.
