Scientists in China have created a groundbreaking metal-polymer conductor (MPC)—a new class of flexible, highly stretchable circuits made from elastic polymers mixed with liquid metals like gallium and indium. Unlike traditional solid metals, this material bends, twists, and stretches freely while still maintaining strong electrical conductivity.
Under a microscope, the MPC looks like liquid metal islands floating inside a polymer sea, with a conductive liquid layer underneath that keeps electricity flowing even during extreme deformation. This unique structure makes the technology perfect for wearable sensors, medical patches, soft robotics, and implantable devices.
Researchers have already tested MPCs in real applications, including wearable keyboard gloves and electrodes that help guide DNA through live cell membranes—showing how powerful and versatile the material truly is. The polymers used can be swapped depending on the purpose: super-elastic ones for stretchable circuits, and biocompatible or biodegradable ones for devices inside the human body.
With screen printing and microfluidic patterning, MPCs can be shaped into almost any 2D design, opening the path toward next-generation cardiovascular monitors and disease-treating implants.
