Remembering the Greatest Champion of Labour Rights on this May Day!
ASA remembers Babasaheb Dr. B. R. Ambedkar on this International Labour Day. In the 7th session of Indian Labour Conference in New Delhi, November 27, 1942, Babasaheb brought down the working hours from 14 hours to 8 hours. Babasaheb played an indispensable role in the enactment of crucial labour laws like 'Mines Maternity Benefit Act', 'Women Labour Welfare Fund', 'Women and Child Labour Protection Act', 'Maternity Benefit for Women Labour', and 'Restoration of Ban on Employment of Women on Underground Work in Coal Mines. Babasaheb was also instrumental in the setting up of 'Tripartite Labour Council' in 1942 to safeguard social security measures for the workers. Over all this Babasaheb theorised the distortion of the idea of labour by Caste by not just dividing labour but by dividing labourers.
Jai Bhim!
