China sets launch date for world’s first thorium molten salt nuclear power station
Construction of a molten salt nuclear power plant that uses thorium as fuel instead of uranium is set to begin in the Gobi Desert
China is set to begin construction of the world’s first commercial thorium molten salt nuclear power station in the Gobi Desert. This reactor, which uses thorium instead of uranium, is expected to be safer, more efficient, and produce less long-lived radioactive waste. The project is part of China’s efforts to develop advanced nuclear technologies as it moves toward carbon neutrality.
China has already built and tested a smaller 2 MWt experimental thorium molten salt reactor (TMSR-LF1), which achieved criticality in October 2023. If successful, this larger commercial-scale reactor could pave the way for a new era of nuclear power.
