At Startup Mahakumbh 2025 in New Delhi, Union Minister Piyush Goyal told Indian startups that they should focus more on advanced technologies—like electric vehicles, batteries, robotics, and 3D printing—similar to what China is doing.
He criticized the rise of quick delivery services (like 10-minute grocery and food delivery), saying these don’t create meaningful jobs or help the country grow in important tech areas. He questioned if we should be satisfied with just becoming “delivery boys and girls.”
His comments caused a stir in the startup world.
- Zepto’s co-founder, Aadit Palicha, said the government needs to support startups working in deep-tech areas.
- Investor Mohandas Pai also said the government should do more to help those building advanced tech.
Despite the backlash, Goyal said the government is still committed to helping startups grow and believes they have a big role in shaping India’s future economy.
