I usually do this on the anniversary, but starting tomorrow morning, I will be hooked up to machines in the hospital for two weeks and unable to do much of anything.
On April 15, 1912, the "unsinkable" RMS Titanic sinks in North Atlantic, after colliding with an iceberg, claiming 1,526 lives (estimated) and sparing only 705 passengers and crew.
April 14th:
Six ice warnings are received (and ignored)
At around 10:30 AM, wireless operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride finally get the radio working, after it broke down the night before, defying Company policy. They will spend the rest of the day being overworked.
At noontime, some passengers are choosing not to take their usual walks on deck because they feel it's too cold and begin asking about possible ice in the area.
At dinnertime, the unusually bitter cold is the main conversation and most immediately return to their cabins.
9:48 PM: SS Californian sends a courtesy message to Titanic she is trapped in the ice field a few miles ahead and stopped for the night. Titanic cuts her off with the words "Shut up! Shut up! I am busy working Cape Race!" Cyril Evans of Californian signs off for the night and goes to bed. He will regret it for the rest of his life.
11:15 PM: The liner Mesaba sends her final ice warning to Titanic.
11:48 PM: After trying to go around it, Titanic sideswipes (and possibly runs over) an iceberg at least as big as the ship. First Officer William Murdoch is on watch and does what he had successfully done to prevent head on collisions in the past, but the ship is too big to make a quick turn.
April 15th:
At midnight, the lifeboats are uncovered and swung out. About half an hour passes before the first lifeboat is launched with a capacity of 65, but only carries 28.
Distress rockets are fired and seen by the officers on SS Californian, but ignored.
Captain Edward Smith tells the wireless operators to send out a distress call and gives the wrong position coordinates. Within twenty minutes, Fourth Officer Joseph Boxhall arrives saying the coordinates are wrong and gives them another set of coordinates that are also wrong. Shortly after, they are given the correct coordinates by Third Officer Joseph Pittman.
The band begins to play. They will keep playing until the end and none will survive.
RMS Carpathia is the second ship to respond and sends a message that she is coming to their rescue at full steam. It will take four hours.
2:16 AM: After remaining at their post at least fifteen minutes beyond being relieved, Jack Phillips and Harold Bride finally abandon their positions and climb upon the roof of the officers' quarters and quickly separated. Bride is washed overboard with upturned Collapsible B. He will barely survive the sinking by climbing on to it, along with thirty-six others. Five more, including Phillips, will also find a place on the boat, but die waiting for dawn, when they are expecting to be rescued.
4:30 AM: As the sun rises, RMS Carpathia appears and begins zigzagging through the water, picking up survivors.
Lifeboats #4, #6, #8, #12 and #14 pick up the last survivors, those on Collapsible B.
10:30 AM: The last survivor boards Carpathia and five men who died in the boats are buried at sea.
SS Californian arrives on the scene, offering assistance, but is refused and told to stay and look for bodies.
RMS Olympic offers to take on survivors, but is declined and told to continue on original course.
April 16th : Two more survivors die in the hospital and are buried at sea.
After hearing Carpathia's wireless operator is in desperate need of help, Harold Bride offers to return to work, despite having suffered severely frost bitten feet and needing to be carried everywhere. His offer is quickly accepted, despite the doctor's warning against it.
April 18: A cold, hard rain and boatload of reporters are the first to greet RMS Carpathia, as she makes port.
A large crowd gathered at the dock watches in horror, disbelief, and complete silence as Titanic's lifeboats are lowered onto White Star Line's dock, before going to Cunard's dock.
Before anyone can disembark, three men board with arrest warrants for White Star Line Chairman J. Bruce Ismay and Titanic's Second Officer Charles Lightoller and Junior Wireless Operator Harold Bride, and take them into custody. It is only to ensure that they testify at the upcoming Inquiries.
First Class Passenger Margaret Brown refuses to leave the ship until she makes sure every single survivor is reunited with family and given proper medical attention. She quickly starts up a collection for survivors and victims' families. It will soon be taken over by international governments as the Titanic Survivors' Fund.
Many safety regulations were put in place as a result of the Titanic Disaster.
The requirement of lifeboats for all onboard, regular lifeboat drills, 24/7 radio vigilance at sea, ship routes being moved further south, the establishments of the Federal Communications Commission, British Broadcasting Corporation, and the International Ice patrol are all a direct result of the sinking.
